How a window is compared
Rank is based on regular-season wins within the conference. Equal-win playoff teams use playoff seed; otherwise official final standings order is the fallback.
The COVID-shortened season uses final winning percentage for conference position because teams completed unequal numbers of games.
Offensive and defensive rating ranks are league-wide. Identical rank values remain exact matches; non-identical ranks are compared by relative league position so historical expansion eras remain comparable.
A franchise cannot match an overlapping version of the target window. Older or newer non-overlapping eras from the same franchise remain eligible.
For multi-season comparisons, same-franchise windows shifted by only one or two seasons are grouped together as nearby versions of the same run. Windows shifted by three or more seasons can rank separately. One-season comparisons remain season-by-season.
